To understand the present and to anticipate the future, we first have to study the past. That is what we are here for. We research and teach about events and developments that occurred two, two hundred, or two thousand years ago. We analyse regional, national and global processes. We combine cultural, economic and political history. In short, we look at the past with open eyes – and with the conviction that what we see also enables us to get a sharper and more fascinating picture of our own times.
